New Hailstone Record!!

Hailstone sets new record

Heard reports this morning of a new record hailstone...maybe I'm a little out of
touch with the records, but thought the largest recorded hailstone was in Coffeyville, KS
back in the 70's.

Come to find out it was broken by Nebraska and now by South Dakota?

Actually amazing to me is that for someone that has lived their life in what is deemed
Tornado Alley for years, one would think that the updrafts are stronger and more frequent
in our area to support larger hail development.  I really think that most either go unreported
in rural open areas or simply are not saved to prove the size and measurements.

At any rate, will let them take the record!  I'm a softy...don't like hard water unless it is in my
iced tea or soda.

Oh...the size is reported to be 8 inches in diameter and that was reported after it had set for
awhile in the yard.  They expected it was around 11 inches in diameter at one point (estimated of course).

Have a Great Day :)

  • I was in the Blackwell Ok. Tornado back in the 50's and we had six hail stones hit the house causing $2,000 worth of damage.  They were like cannon balls the size of large grapefruit.  We also had spear ice like large ice sicles sticking in the ground.
